How much international variation in child height can sanitation explain?

چکیده

Abstract Physical height is an important economic variable reflecting health and human capital. Puzzlingly, however, differences in average height across developing countries are not well explained by differences in wealth. In particular, children in India are shorter, on average, than children in Africa who are poorer, on average, a paradox which is often called “the Asian enigma.” The primary contribution of this paper is to document that cross-country variation in sanitation statistically explains a large and important fraction of international height differences. Over a billion people worldwide – and more than half of Indian households – defecate openly without using a toilet or latrine, introducing germs into the environment that cause disease and stunt children’s growth. I apply three complementary empirical strategies to Demographic and Health Survey data to identify the fraction due to sanitation: country-level regressions using collapsed DHS surveys; within-country analysis of differences between India’s first and second DHS surveys; and econometric decomposition of the India-Africa height difference in child-level data. Open defecation, which is exceptionally widespread in India, accounts for much of the excess stunting in India.

Disease externalities and net nutrition: Evidence from changes in sanitation and child height in Cambodia, 2005–2010

Child height is an important indicator of human capital and human development, in large part because early life health and net nutrition shape both child height and adult economic productivity and health. Between 2005 and 2010, the average height of children under 5 in Cambodia significantly increased. What contributed to this improvement? Recent evidence suggests that exposure to poor sanitati...

I get height with a little help from my friends: herd protection from sanitation on child growth in rural Ecuador.

BACKGROUND Infectious disease interventions, such as vaccines and bed nets, have the potential to provide herd protection to non-recipients. Similarly, improved sanitation in one household may provide community-wide benefits if it reduces contamination in the shared environment. Sanitation at the household level is an important predictor of child growth, but less is known about the effect of sa...

Place and Child Health: The Interaction of Population Density and Sanitation in Developing Countries

A long literature in demography has debated the importance of place for health, especially children's health. In this study, we assess whether the importance of dense settlement for infant mortality and child height is moderated by exposure to local sanitation behavior. Is open defecation (i.e., without a toilet or latrine) worse for infant mortality and child height where population density is...

The impact of Water Supply and Sanitation interventions on child health: evidence from DHS surveys

This study estimates the impact of improved sanitation on diarrhoeal incidence among Nepalese children below the age of five. Using 2006 cross-sectional survey data from the DHS for Nepal, I employ non-parametric techniques to match children belonging to ”treatment” groups with children in a ”control” group without access to the facilities to explain the decline in diarrhea rates among children...
